Facebook has just launched its new networking tool which doubles up as a job hunt resource as well. This is called as the Professional Profile and it is definitely worth checking out. This is a place where you can put up your professional resume and you can bring in your profiles from other portals such as LinkedIn. Also, the networking aspect is very good because it helps you to get in touch with other people who have similar interests and intentions as you. You can actually make yourself a part of a professional stream of people who are in the same league as you are. You can find this feature in your profile. Visit your Facebook profile and check out application settings. You will find professional profile here. You can then choose between Professional Network, Resume and For Hire.
It is quite simple to put up your resume here, as simple as uploading a Word document. But you could go more sophisticated and get your LinkedIn profile added here. All your referrals and testimonials from LinkedIn are brought into your Facebook professional profile page.
Then there are those small features that make things more interesting. Like, you can add a professional badge to the profile you have.
However, there are a few quirks as well. The networking feature is too technical and isn’t much liked by people who like their things simple.
You can find all your friends here and you can add people to your professional profile from here. These people will then be added to your network. However, there are frequent crashes when you try to add people and you might need to restart Facebook a couple of times. Also, invites don’t always go through and you are left guessing.
One more feature here is the For Hire option. You have an Add to For Hire button where you can get selected for jobs. However, people who aren’t using this option for looking for jobs shouldn’t click on this button. If you have a job already, you don’t want to click on this button because it might send a signal to your current employers that you are looking for job opportunities elsewhere.
Facebook can thus be considered as an option to look for jobs. But since it is not a dedicated job hunt portal, it is not all that effective. Also, it works best for people who know how to keep their personal and professional lives separate.
